Physical activity (PA) both prevents and improves cardiovascular (CV) risk profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. To assess the value of both aerobic and resistance training, as well as the effect of structured exercise programs on total PA, Italian investigators conducted a multisite study that involved 606 sedentary adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomized to twice weekly supervised aerobic and resistance training exercise (total, 150 minutes weekly) plus structured exercise counseling, or to the counseling alone. Counseling was provided to both groups every 3 months.
