Previous studies have showed that approximately one quarter of rehospitalized Medicare patients are readmitted to a different hospital — but what factors drive admissions to another hospital? Using Medicare data (from 2004–2006), researchers identified a random sample of patients who were readmitted within 30 days after discharge from acute care hospitals and examined predictors for rehospitalization at a different hospital.
Of 74,000 patients, 22% were rehospitalized at a different hospital.
