Given sufficient longevity, most men are destined to develop benign prostatic hypertrophy; however, can its development be halted? Researchers hypothesized that treatment with dihydrotestosterone (DHT; available at compounding pharmacies) might inhibit prostate growth through a metabolite and might lower intraprostatic testosterone levels.
Researchers randomized 114 men (age, ≥50) without known prostate disease to daily transdermal DHT (70 mg) or placebo for 2 years. Prostate volumes, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, bone-mineral density (BMD), and quality of life were assessed.
