Neuro-inflammatory mechanisms likely play a role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson disease (PD). Therefore, might nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) confer protection against PD? In this case-control study, investigators evaluated the association between PD and use of NSAIDs.
More than 22,000 men (age range, 40–84 at enrollment) who were free of PD at baseline participated in the study. NSAID use was reported on annual questionnaires. During 25 years of follow-up, 616 participants developed PD; each case patient was matched with as many as five controls either by age alone or by age plus comorbidity scores.
