Does morbid obesity affect outcomes of total hip replacement (THR)? In this study of 3290 THRs in patients with osteoarthritis, orthopedists at a single Canadian center examined outcomes according to body-mass index (BMI); 6% of patients were morbidly obese (BMI ≥40 kg/m2), and 37%, 37%, and 20% were obese, overweight, and normal or underweight, respectively.
Preoperatively, mean scores on standardized assessments of symptoms and function were lower (i.e., worse) in the morbidly obese group than in the other groups. Postoperatively (at 1 to 2 years), scores among patients in all BMI categories improved and became similar; thus, morbidly obese patients showed larger gains than did other patients.
