Women who undergo hysterectomy often have elective bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) to prevent future ovarian cancer. Since the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) randomized trial showed harm from hormone therapy (HT) in postmenopausal women, HT use has declined, and elective BSO has become controversial. In this study from the observational (nonrandomized) portion of the WHI, researchers used prospective cohort data to assess outcomes in 25,448 women who underwent hysterectomy; 14,254 also underwent BSO.
