Automated closed-loop insulin delivery systems control blood glucose by linking continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring with subcutaneous insulin pump delivery. In two randomized crossover studies, investigators compared the safety and efficacy of overnight closed-loop insulin delivery with those of conventional insulin pump delivery in 24 adults with type 1 diabetes.
In one study, overnight closed-loop insulin delivery was compared with conventional insulin pump delivery after patients ate moderate evening meals (60 g of carbohydrates); in the other study, the delivery systems were compared after larger meals (100 g of carbohydrates) accompanied by wine.
