Randomized trials have demonstrated consistently the effectiveness of available human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines for preventing new infections and cervical cytopathology related to vaccine serotypes. Researchers in Australia now report the effects on incident cervical lesions of a broad public HPV vaccination program.
Data were analyzed for the state of Victoria, where quadrivalent HPV vaccine was offered to all girls in grade 7 (age range, 12–13) beginning in April 2007; an estimated 79% of these girls were immunized during the first year.
