Routine rotavirus vaccination for infants was introduced to the U.S. in 2006, and, by 2008, an estimated 57% of infants had received one or more doses. Using a large nationwide database of hospital discharge diagnoses, researchers compared the number of discharge diagnoses of rotavirus and gastroenteritis with no specific cause for 2000–2006 with that for 2008.
In 2008, admissions for diarrhea specifically coded as rotavirus infections were significantly lower than for 2000–2006, not only among infants but also among children of all ages, teenagers, and young adults (through age 24).
