Several studies in 2011 addressed whether markers such as coronary artery calcium (CAC), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), or even coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) refined coronary artery disease (CAD) risk stratification.
In the placebo-controlled JUPITER trial, published in 2008, apparently healthy participants with relatively low LDL cholesterol levels (<130 mg/dL) but elevated hsCRP levels (≥2.0 mg/L) suffered fewer adverse cardiovascular events when they received rosuvastatin (Crestor; JW Gen Med Nov 18 2008). But, if statins were prescribed to everyone meeting these criteria, many people would be treated, and few would benefit.
