Estimates of the incidence of early seizures after stroke vary across studies. Two new studies add to the literature.
A multicenter Italian study involved 714 patients — 85% with ischemic stroke and 15% with hemorrhagic stroke. The proportions of patients with clinically evident seizures during the week after acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes were 4% and 16%, respectively. Cortical (vs. subcortical) location and hemorrhagic (vs. ischemic) stroke type were the only independent predictors of early seizure.
