Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a risk factor for cardiovascular mortality among men. In this prospective study from Spain, researchers evaluated whether the association also applies to women and whether treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) lowers risk. For a median of 6 years, they followed 1116 women who underwent diagnostic sleep studies for suspected OSA. Patients with no evidence of OSA on sleep testing served as controls. Women with apnea-hypopnea indexes (AHIs) of 10–29 were categorized as having mild-to-moderate OSA, and those with AHIs ≥30 were classified as having severe OSA.
