The medical literature includes several reports of “cannabinoid hyperemesis,” a condition characterized by cyclic vomiting in long-term marijuana users. Mayo Clinic investigators searched their institutional electronic records and identified 98 long-term marijuana users with unexplained recurrent vomiting.
Among the patients for whom duration and frequency of use were known, two-thirds had used cannabis for >1 year; nearly all used it at least weekly, and 59% used it daily. Patients had cyclic nausea and vomiting, often associated with epigastric pain and weight loss. Many reported that hot showers or baths relieved their symptoms.
