Case reports have described an association between oral bisphosphonate use and anterior uveitis and scleritis. To further explore this possible link, researchers performed a retrospective cohort study using British Columbia's provincial database. Between 2000 and 2007, nearly a million residents visited an ophthalmologist; about 11,000 of them had recently received a first prescription for a bisphosphonate.
In the cohort overall, about 2% received a diagnosis of scleritis and 1% a diagnosis of uveitis.
