Hyperglycemia at admission has been associated with adverse outcomes among hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) — including patients without preexisting diabetes (Diabetes Care 2005; 28:810, and J Infect 2010; 60:99). In this multicenter, prospective study, investigators examined whether hyperglycemia at hospital admission predicts death in CAP patients with and without preexisting diabetes.
Nearly 7000 patients (mean age, 60) were evaluated; 5% died within 28 days, 8% within 90 days, and 9% within 180 days.
