Prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or both), which affects tens of millions of Americans, is associated with elevated risk for adverse cardiovascular (CV) events. In this meta-analysis of 15 prospective studies involving 760,000 patients, investigators assessed whether prediabetes also is associated with stroke.
In eight studies that defined prediabetes as a fasting glucose level of 100–125 mg/dL, risk for stroke was not elevated after adjustment for multiple CV risk factors. In five studies that defined prediabetes as a fasting glucose level of 110–125 mg/dL, adjusted risk for stroke was significantly elevated (by 21%).
