About 800,000 people suffer first acute myocardial infarctions (MIs) annually in the U.S., and a sizable proportion of such patients are readmitted within 30 days after their initial events. To characterize 30-day rehospitalizations after incident MIs, researchers used a population-based registry from Olmsted County, Minnesota, and evaluated all 3010 patients (mean age, 67; 41% women) who survived incident MIs from 1987 to 2010. Manual chart reviews were performed to determine reasons for rehospitalizations.
The 30-day rehospitalization rate was 18.6%; 43% of rehospitalizations were related to incident MIs, 30% were unrelated, and 27% could not be linked clearly to incident MIs (e.g., atypical chest pain). Angiography was performed during 24…
