Bariatric surgery improves glycemic control in obese patients with type 2 diabetes (JW Gen Med Mar 26 2012). To determine whether this effect holds up during prolonged follow-up, Swedish researchers conducted a nonrandomized observational study of about 1700 nondiabetic obese patients (mean body-mass index, 42 kg/m2) who underwent bariatric surgery (mostly vertical banded gastroplasty). These patients were compared with about 1700 similarly obese nondiabetic patients who did not undergo bariatric surgery but were matched to surgery patients on numerous variables.
