Vestibular migraine (also called migrainous vertigo) often is overlooked as a possible cause of vertigo in primary care settings. A German group has proposed diagnostic criteria that include episodic vertigo plus migrainous symptoms (e.g., headache, photophobia, phonophobia, visual auras) during vertigo attacks (Cephalalgia 2011; 31:906). Now, this group reports on the natural history of vestibular migraine in 61 adults (54 women).
During average follow-up of 9 years, 87% of patients were still symptomatic, with duration of attacks ranging from minutes to hours.
