Sitagliptin (Januvia) is a widely prescribed dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor for treating patients with type 2 diabetes. However, we know little about sitagliptin's safety relative to other oral hypoglycemic drugs.
Investigators retrospectively analyzed data on nearly 73,000 U.S. patients (mean age, 52) who were new users of oral hypoglycemic drugs between 2004 and 2009; about 11% used sitagliptin at some point during the study. Among sitagliptin users, 91% used it as an add-on to other oral hypoglycemic drugs. During mean follow-up of 2.5 years, 19% of patients were hospitalized at least once, and 1% died.
