Preoperative chemotherapy is used increasingly in breast cancer patients. In this retrospective study, researchers evaluated the effect of preoperative chemotherapy on the extent of resection and requisite additional surgery among 509 patients who had been enrolled in prospective, randomized chemotherapy trials.
Patients with T1 tumors at presentation had similar amounts of tissue resected whether they underwent preoperative chemotherapy or proceeded directly to surgery. Compared with postoperative chemotherapy, preoperative chemotherapy did not significantly change the number of procedures, reexcision rates, or volume of breast tissue resected in women with T1 tumors.
