Most patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are cured by combination chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or both, but many patients experience late treatment-related complications, including second neoplasms, hypothyroidism, and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Investigators from the Netherlands reviewed data collected from 1965 to 1995 on 1474 patients in whom HL was diagnosed before age 41. All patients survived at least 5 years after initial diagnosis. Researchers assessed long-term risk for CVD and correlated adverse coronary events with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and coexisting risk factors, such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and elevated serum cholesterol.
