Efforts to lessen the deleterious effects of androgen-deprivation therapy on bone-mineral density (BMD) and osteoporotic-related fractures constitute an important area of clinical research (Journal Watch Oncology and Hematology Apr 2 2007), because more than 500,000 men in the U.S. currently receive gonadotrophin-releasing–hormone (GnRH)-agonist therapy. Zoledronic acid (Zometa), a potent bisphosphonate, is FDA-approved (4 mg, intravenously every 3 weeks) for use in men with bone metastases resulting from castrate metastatic prostate cancer. In previous studies, researchers showed that zoledronic acid (administered every 3 months) confers significant improvement in BMD for men with nonmetastatic prostate cancer (J Urol 2003; 169:2008).
