Use of intravenous bisphosphonates to lower the incidence of cancer-related skeletal morbidity has increased dramatically during the last decade. Since 2003, however, reports of a higher risk for osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in patients who receive IV therapy with the bisphosphonates pamidronate and zoledronic acid have garnered attention. Before then, recognition of this disorder had been limited largely to the domains of dentists and oral surgeons. Most reports about ONJ have consisted of surveys, small case series, or both, so clear links to bisphosphonate therapy have been difficult to validate.
