Effect of Preoperative Bevacizumab on Hepatic Cancer Surgical Outcomes

Bevacizumab treatment resulted in better pathologic responses among CLM patients with tumors ≤4 cm.

Does adding bevacizumab (Avastin) to fluoropyrimidine plus oxaliplatin (5FU/OX) chemotherapy before hepatic resection in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CLM) affect outcomes beneficially? Investigators from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center retrospectively assessed the response of CLM, as measured by systematic pathologic analysis of tumor viability (evaluated by percentage of viable tumor cells in relation to tumor surface area) and the incidence of hepatic injury in 105 consecutive patients (285 tumors). Forty-three patients received 5FU/OX without bevacizumab, and 62 received 5FU/OX with bevacizumab.
