Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) have been used extensively to treat and prevent anemia of cancer (AoC). Unfortunately, results of recent trials have raised concerns about risks that might be associated with these agents, particularly for off-label uses, such as AoC that is not associated with active chemotherapy. In a multinational study, investigators assessed whether darbepoetin alfa (DA; Aranesp) was safe and effective for treatment of AoC in patients who were not receiving active treatment.
