Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) was among the earliest advanced-stage cancers to be curable with combination chemotherapy. However, the high probability of remission and cure for HL patients has been tempered by late morbidity and mortality from second malignancies and late cardiovascular complications.
Investigators used the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) database to assess trends in survival for adolescents and adults (age, ≥15) in whom HL was diagnosed between 1980 and 2004. The researchers identified 16,402 HL patients from nine geographic regions in the registry. Survival was calculated in 5- and 10-year increments for patients surviving beyond 1 year after diagnosis.
