Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) has been integrated widely into clinical practice in the U.S. during the past 5 years. The technique has theoretical advantages over open retropubic radical prostatectomy (RRP), including less intraoperative blood loss and better visualization of the surgical field. However, data to compare oncologic, functional, and morbidity outcomes of LRP versus RRP are lacking.
Researchers in New York conducted a nonrandomized, prospective analysis of 1430 men with clinically localized prostate cancer (cT1-cT3a) who underwent radical prostatectomy consecutively from 2003 through 2005.
