In the original industry-sponsored TAX 327 trial, investigators randomized 1006 men with advanced prostate cancer to receive mitoxantrone plus prednisone (control) every 3 weeks or docetaxel plus prednisone either weekly or every 3 weeks (N Engl J Med 2004; 351:1502). A recent update of the trial (JW Oncol Hematol Feb 5 2008) confirmed that 3-year survival rates were higher for patients who received docetaxel every 3 weeks than for those who received mitoxantrone plus prednisone every 3 weeks (18.5% vs. 13.5%).
