Microparticles that are shed from platelets, leukocytes, erythrocytes, and endothelial cells during cell activation or apoptosis are thought to play a major role in thrombus formation. To investigate the link between microparticle concentration, thrombin generation (TG), and thrombosis in veins and arteries, investigators examined blood samples from 66 patients who had experienced one or more episodes of thrombosis.
Forty-one patients (62%) experienced single thrombotic (ST) events, and 25 (38%) experienced two or more recurrent thrombotic (RT) events within 5 years.
