Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most prevalent adult leukemia in Western countries. During the past decade, management of this B-cell malignancy has benefited from the availability of new chemoimmunotherapy regimens and prognostic markers. As a result of these advances, the International Workshop on CLL recently revised the National Cancer Institute Working Group 1996 guidelines to include the use of new molecular and phenotypic markers and to update procedures for managing CLL patients in clinical trials and general practice.
