Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is associated with hematologic malignancies, and risk for this complication is worsened by use of high-dose corticosteroids, chemotherapeutic agents, and central venous catheters. Not surprising, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), which requires all these modalities, occasionally is accompanied by VTE. However, given that patients who undergo HSCT also have a propensity for bleeding, caution should be used when administering anticoagulant prophylaxis. To help clinicians assess the relative risks for VTE and bleeding in this population, investigators reviewed records of more than 1500 HSCT patients, most of whom had non-Hodgkin lymphoma (34%; mean age, 45; median hospitalization, 26 days).
