Active screening of the general population for colorectal cancer, the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., has contributed to declines in disease incidence and related mortality. Moreover, studies indicate that better use of screening might identify more early-stage cancers than are currently found. However, the appropriate interval for screening colonoscopy is neither clearly defined nor agreed upon. In addition, only slightly more than half the population will choose to undergo screening procedures for colorectal cancer, in part because of the complexity and invasiveness of the procedure.
