Bisphosphonates are used routinely to prevent bone loss and fractures in patients with breast cancer. Preclinical evidence suggests that bisphosphonates also exert anticancer effects through induction of tumor-cell apoptosis and immune surveillance as well as inhibition of tumor-cell adhesion to bone, matrix invasion, and angiogenesis.
