The bioavailability of lapatinib (Tykerb) — an oral inhibitor of ErbB1 and ErbB2 tyrosine kinases that is used for HER2-positive breast cancer — is influenced when administered with food. Results of small studies showed that when lapatinib was administered with either a high-fat or low-fat breakfast, the area under the serum-concentration curve (AUC) for the agent was higher (by 60% or 200%, respectively) than when given to patients in a fasted state (Eur J Cancer 2003; 1:S169:abstract 558).
