Anticoagulants are effective in preventing and treating venous thrombosis (VT), but they can provoke major hemorrhages. Another approach involves using statins to ameliorate the inflammatory process that incites thrombus formation in veins. Several recent studies were designed to assess whether statins can reduce risk for VT.
Investigators in the Netherlands examined 4500 patients with first episodes of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and 5900 matched participants without VTE. Statin use was associated with significantly lower risk for VTE than nonuse after adjustment for age, sex, body-mass index, atherosclerotic disease, antiplatelet therapy, and vitamin K–antagonist use (odds ratio, 0.45; 95% confidence interval, 0.36–0.56).
