In a retrospective study of 9500 women with early-stage breast cancer, brain metastases as the first site of recurrence occurred substantially more often among women with estrogen receptor (ER)-negative disease than among those with ER-positive disease (5-year cumulative incidence, 1.9% vs. 0.7%; Ann Oncol 2006; 17:935).
