Treatment options for pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., remain poor. Weekly gemcitabine, the standard treatment for patients with metastatic disease, yields responses in 6% of patients, a median survival of 6 months, and a 1-year survival rate of 18%. With the exception of adding erlotinib (Tarceva) to gemcitabine (JW Oncol Hematol May 14 2007), combining gemcitabine with other agents — including bevacizumab (Avastin) and cetuximab (Erbitux) — has failed to improve survival in phase III trials.
