Breast tumors that are ≤1 cm in size generally are not associated with axillary nodal involvement and have excellent overall prognoses. Patients who have tumors >1 cm that express human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) can benefit from trastuzumab (anti-HER2) therapy, but trastuzumab for patients with HER2-positive tumors ≤1 cm is not standard therapy, given the scarcity of data on its use in this population. Better understanding of the prognosis associated with small, HER2-positive tumors might allow clinicians to make more-informed treatment decisions. In two recent reports, investigators evaluated the effect of HER2 amplification on breast cancer–recurrence rates in patients with small, axillary node–negative breast cancers.
