Risks for developing congestive heart failure (CHF) and other cardiovascular problems as a result of cumulative anthracycline exposure are particularly relevant in the early-stage breast cancer treatment setting, where anthracycline-containing adjuvant regimens have long been a standard of care. Although patients usually receive anthracycline doses well below the maximum recommended lifetime dosage, rising cardiovascular disease rates following anthracycline treatment suggest that significant damage might occur even at these lower doses.
