Docetaxel-based chemotherapy has been the standard of care since 2004 for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). However, patients who have experienced disease progression following treatment with docetaxel have had limited therapeutic options.
In the TROPIC trial, investigators compared the efficacy of cabazitaxel (Jevtana) — a new semisynthetic taxane — with that of mitoxantrone in CRPC patients with progression after docetaxel. A total of 750 patients from 26 countries were randomized to receive prednisone (10 mg daily) plus either mitoxantrone at standard doses (12 mg/m2 every 3 weeks) or cabazitaxel (25 mg/m2 every 3 weeks).
