Investigators in France addressed whether platinum-based regimens would benefit patients with non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who are older than 70, as this group is not often represented in clinical trials. In the IFCT-0501 phase III trial, 451 NSCLC patients (median age, 77.2; range, 70–89; performance status, 0–1) were randomized to single-agent chemotherapy with gemcitabine or vinorelbine or to a modified carboplatin plus paclitaxel regimen. Overall survival was significantly longer for patients who received platinum-doublet versus single-agent therapy (10.4 vs. 6.2 months; P=0.0001), as was median progression-free survival (6.3 vs. 3.2 months; P<0.0001).
