Studies have shown that patients with lymphoproliferative diseases have excess risk for second cancers. To better quantitate risks for specific lymphoma subtypes in these patients and to identify the most frequent second malignancies, investigators studied a large, population-based cohort of lymphoma survivors who were identified from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer registries.
The researchers evaluated 43,145 patients with a primary diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), follicular lymphoma (FL), or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) who survived at least 1 year after diagnosis. Of these patients, 42,213 were HIV negative; 932 were HIV positive.
