Allogeneic transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), after full- or reduced-intensity conditioning, can cure patients with hematologic malignancies, aplastic anemia, or other disorders. However, severe transplant-related complications or treatment-related mortality can occur, regardless of whether a matched donor is related or unrelated to the patient.
To characterize recent trends in transplant indications and posttransplant outcomes, investigators retrospectively analyzed data from 2566 patients who had undergone a first allogeneic HSC transplantation at a single research center. The study included two cohorts of patients: 1418 who were treated from 1993 to 1997 and 1148 who were treated from 2003 to 2007.
