The role of autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) as consolidation treatment for higher-risk, aggressive B- and T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) remains controversial. In the phase III, randomized, SWOG S9704 trial, U.S. and Canadian researchers compared the use of 8 cycles of CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone) with or without rituximab versus CHOP for 6 cycles followed by ASCT in patients who achieved partial or complete remission after 5 cycles. Eligible patients were aged <65 with B- or T-cell diffuse aggressive NHL and high-intermediate or high-risk, age-adjusted International Prognostic Index (IPI) scores.
