Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT), which is widely used in men with nonmetastatic prostate cancer, has been shown to be associated metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and osteoporosis. However, the effect of ADT on cardiovascular (CV) mortality remains controversial.
Now, investigators have performed a meta-analysis of eight randomized trials involving men with unfavorable-risk, nonmetastatic prostate cancer to determine whether ADT is associated with CV mortality, prostate cancer–specific mortality, and all-cause mortality. The trials involved 4141 prostate cancer patients with no evidence of metastases or castration-resistant disease who received immediate ADT (2200 patients) or no ADT (1941 controls) and had median follow-up of ≥1 year.
