Failure to achieve sufficient negative surgical margins during initial partial mastectomies results in the need for reexcision, which can delay the use of adjuvant therapies and lead to total mastectomy. A prior study demonstrated that reexcision rates after initial partial mastectomies performed at a university breast center ranged between 11% and 25% (Arch Surg 2009; 144:455). To expand this analysis, investigators retrospectively evaluated the rates of reexcisions in 2206 women with invasive, incident breast cancer who underwent initial partial mastectomy or open breast biopsy at four institutions (1 university center and 3 large health plans).
