Survival in metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) has improved during the past two decades thanks to the advent of more effective combination chemotherapy and the use of agents that target vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGFR). However, the median survival for patients with metastatic CRC remains at only 2 years, and no therapy options exist for those with disease that is refractory to conventional chemotherapy beyond novel agents in phase I trials.
