The association between cancer and venous thromboembolism (VTE) is well established. But opinions vary regarding the optimal method of prophylaxis and treatment for patients with cancer-related thrombosis.
To bring coherence to this field, an international consensus working group has devised evidence-based guidelines for managing VTE in cancer patients. The following is a summary of their recommendations:
Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) should be used for the initial treatment of VTE and continued for 3 months or longer, as determined by individual risk-benefit ratios.
Unfractionated heparin (UH) or fondaparinux can be used instead of LMWH, but LMWH is preferred over vitamin K antagonists.
