Several ethnic groups have elevated prevalence of BRCA mutations, which carry excess for a number of cancers, including breast and ovarian cancer. However, little is known about how often BRCA mutations occur among Hispanics.
Investigators have now studied BRCA mutations in two large cohorts of Hispanics in the Southwestern U.S. A clinic-based cohort comprised 746 probands (mainly of Mexican ancestry) who had a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer, had enrolled in the institutional review board–approved prospective Heredity Cancer Registry, and underwent clinical BRCA testing.
